Title IX kicked in just a little too late for me. I didn’t become an athlete until I was 40. Through most of my life, I somewhat arrogantly joked that my sport was turning pages. I had no idea what I was missing.
“It’s not just that the people who are going to do well in life play sports, but that sports help people do better in life,” says the author of this research. Athletic participation is also associated with lower risk of obesity 25-30 years later.
So get your girls (and boys) active. Help them to find the sport that sparks their fire, and then support them in participating. The rewards are vast, and lifelong.
