“Subjects lifting more weight fewer times burned more energy and had a greater metabolic boost after exercise.”
via Really? – The Claim – For Better Muscle Tone, Go Lighter and Repeat – Question – NYTimes.com.
This is consistent with what I’ve been preaching for years: if you are doing strength training, it is better to lift heavier, with fewer repetitions. Better for your appearance, your metabolism and your weight. My son was a body builder, so I know what it takes to get really big, and it’s a lot more effort in terms of both food and training than any of us would accidentally make. Apart from that, women don’t naturally have the hormones to develop really big muscles.
So if you are working with weights so light you can swing them around, heavy up. And if you are doing cardio, make sure you are doing high intensity interval training, not longer moderate cardio.
